Our History

Al Sadeem means “nebula” in Arabic

Al Sadeem Astronomy is the result of a desire to give space enthusiasts in the UAE a place they could go to and learn about the Universe.

This desire brought together Thabet Al Qaissieh and Alejandro Palado, who have both been captivated by the night sky’s mysteries since they were kids.

And the central force that made the Observatory a reality were the words of Thabet’s late younger brother Mansour: “You will be giving so much to the community.”

In 2016, the Al Sadeem Observatory in Abu Dhabi opened to the public, becoming the first private observatory to offer a front seat to the cosmos.

On Al Sadeem Astronomy’s Visual Identity

Every year, students of my classes of visual design at the New York University – Abu Dhabi are exposed to real briefs from real clients. For the students of the 2018 ‘Yes Logo’ Class, the task was to redesign the logo for Al Sadeem Astronomy.

Idea

The conversation between two Astronomy enthusiasts, Mr. Thabet Al Qaissieh and Mr. Alejandro Palado, who have been captivated by the night sky’s mysteries since they were kids, was the starting point of Al Sadeem Astronomy. Upon the conversation and the motivation by Mr. Mansour Al Qaissieh, the late brother of Mr. Thabet, the idea to establish a small observatory on Mr. Al Qaissieh’s family farmland was sparked in late 2015.

Observatory at the Outskirts of the Capital

Within a few months, the plan was finalized, and an Optical Observation station was constructed and opened to the public to experience the Cosmos from Al Wathba South, Abu Dhabi.

The Place to Explore the Cosmos

Al Sadeem Astronomy has opened the doors to Astronomy Enthusiasts around the region to experience, experiment, and observe the celestial wonders with sophisticated optical astronomy facilities and to the public for guided stargazing experience through modern telescopes.

Collaboration & Networking

Our commitment remains to be a pioneer in optical observations since we established, which brought new collaborations and networks to Al Sadeem Astronomy. Especially, we have collaborated with the New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) to collect the optical time series data of ASASSN-18ey (aka MAXIJ1820+070), a low-mass X-ray binary black hole transient.

Observatory Codes

We received Observatory codes from the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center (M43) and the American Association of Variable Star Observers or AAVSO (OAAA) in 2019.

Vaonis Products – New Era of Telescopes

Al Sadeem Astronomy has collaborated with a French company, Vaonis which is a smart telescope manufacturer that designed a new type of telescope that can image the celestial bodies with a few clicks on your mobile phone. Al Sadeem Astronomy is the only official distributor of Vaonis Smart Telescopes Vespera, Stellina, Vespera II, and Hestia in the Middle East Region.

Cosmic Cube

In late 2023 a new gem was added to Al Sadeem Astronomy, “The Cosmic Cube” an astronomical entertainment system. This new project was established to give an immersive experience to the public while having the observatory tour and stargazing.
